The Vienna Forum To Fight Human Trafficking

Through February 13 — 15, 2008 Capacity Building Officer Ms. Rubina Devrikyan participated in the Forum to Fight Human Trafficking, which was held in Vienna. The event was co-organized by UNODC; UNGIFT; UNICEF; OSCE; IOM and ILO. The Forum focused on the factors which make people vulnerable to human trafficking. On this topic workshops and panels on Demand for Forced Labour and Sexual Exploitation; Corruption and Human Trafficking; Communities in Crisis; Profiling the Traffickers; Trafficking in Persons for the Removal of Organs and Body parts were held. The Forum also explored the impact of human trafficking on the lives of individuals, their communities and on the economies of the origin and destination countries. The following workshops were held to shed light on the topic: Qualifying Human Trafficking, Consequences of Sexual Exploitation; Health and Human Trafficking, the Role of Media in Building Images; Transnational Organized Crime. A special session was organized by International Organization for Migration on the role of religious communities and organizations, with the goal of bringing together members of a number of different religious communities who have been active in advocating against human trafficking and providing support to victims.
The event was very useful in terms of getting introduced to the best practices on fighting human trafficking, launching collaboration with the main international agencies active in the field, exchange of experience and introduction to the latest publications and researches on the issue.
